Christus
Jesus Christ is the only mediator and the only ground of our salvation.
For there is one God, and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus.
¶ What does it mean?
Christ's person and work are enough. His death atones. His priesthood continues. His name is the only name given among men by which we must be saved.
¶ What does it deny?
It denies that anyone else must stand between the sinner and God in order to finish what Christ finished. Pastors serve the church. Saints may be remembered with thanks. They cannot share his mediation.
¶ Where do we see it in Scripture?
- John 14:6I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father, except through me.
- Acts 4:12There is no other name under heaven that is given among men, by which we must be saved.
- Hebrews 7:25He is able to save to the uttermost those who draw near to God through him, seeing he lives forever to make intercession for them.
¶ Why does it matter?
You do not need a second mediator to complete the first. The Bible is a book about him. We study it to see Christ, not to collect religious information.
