Deo Gloria
If salvation is God's work, the praise belongs to him.
Not to us, Yahweh, not to us, but to your name give glory, for your loving kindness, and for your truth's sake.
¶ What does it mean?
Every other sola lands here. If Scripture speaks, if grace saves, if faith receives, if Christ mediates — then no man, movement, or month gets the credit.
¶ What does it deny?
It denies that the church shares God's glory for redemption. We may give thanks for translators, preachers, and Reformers. We do not worship them. The gift is from God.
¶ Where do we see it in Scripture?
- Romans 11:36For of him, and through him, and to him, are all things. To him be the glory for ever.
- 1 Corinthians 10:31Whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God.
- Isaiah 42:8I am Yahweh. That is my name. I will not give my glory to another.
¶ Why does it matter?
Reformation Month is not a festival of Protestant heroes. It is a call to receive the Word God has already given, and to live, read, and give in such a way that his name is large.
