Authority
God's Word has the right to command our belief and obedience.
But this is the one to whom I will look: he who is poor and of a contrite spirit, and who trembles at my word.
¶ What does it mean?
The Bible does not offer suggestions from a distant advisor. God speaks, and his speech binds the conscience. We do not stand over the text to improve it. We sit under it.
¶ Where do we see it in Scripture?
- 2 Timothy 3:16All Scripture is God-breathed. The authority is God's, not the reader's.
- Matthew 4:4Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds out of the mouth of God.
- John 17:17Sanctify them in your truth. Your word is truth.
¶ Historical context
The Reformation recovered this against any claim that church office could create doctrine Scripture had not given. The issue was not whether the church teaches. The issue was whether the church may command what God has not said.
¶ What this does not mean
Authority is not harshness, and it is not a license for proud readers to weaponize verses. The same God who commands also speaks as a Father. Trembling at the Word is humility, not cruelty.
¶ Why it matters
Open the Bible expecting to be addressed. If a passage contradicts a habit, the habit yields. That is what it means to have a Lord who has spoken.
